How it all started

Didactic Turtle has been a project in the making for a long time.

Manuel Leotte started his diving career in 1989. In 1994, he completed his first equipment seminar with La Spirotechnique. With his passion for diving, he continued to develop his skills while working in several locations around the world.

After several years working in Egypt, he decided to return to Portugal in 2009.

Eduardo Gomes started diving in 2004 and immediately fell in love with the activity. His first regulator was a Poseidon Xstream, and with a background in engineering, he immediately felt that the diving market was short of maintenance skills. Therefore, parallel to his development in diving, he started studying all the standards that applied to the diving activity and equipment and started service regulators.

Eduardo and Manuel of Didactic Turtle

In 2009, Eduardo presented a workshop on equipment and standards at a dive centre in Lisbon, and Manuel happened to be there. Immediately, Manuel saw someone with a mindset similar to his regarding the quality of maintenance services. After an initial conversation, they both saw the opportunity, and a long-lasting friendship started.

Eduardo and Manuel understood that diving schools provided diving courses and activities and performed maintenance “on the side” as an extra source of income. Standards continue to be low, and knowledge is limited. The understanding of basic engineering and maintenance rules is inexistent.

It was common for Eduardo to receive regulators that, after being disassembled and cleaned, could not be put together by “technicians”.

From 2009 onwards, Eduardo trained with Manuel as a Technical Diver, and both continued to talk about what the industry needed in terms of maintenance and service.

In 2020, with COVID and lockdowns, and after several conversations, Manuel decided to kick off the Didactic Turtle project and established the company at the beginning of 2021.

The idea behind the project was to focus on the maintenance and servicing of equipment for the diving community. The project would have state-of-the-art equipment for servicing equipment, and all service procedures would follow industry best practices. To achieve this, Eduardo and Manuel contacted all the main brands of diving equipment and Regulatory agencies.

Investments were carried out in tools and training seminars, and all best practices were discussed and implemented at Didactic Turtle.

Didactic Turtle currently holds valid service certifications for more than 15 brands of equipment. Manuel and Eduardo are certified in all of them, making Didactic Turtle the only service centre in Portugal with such capabilities.

We can confidently say that Didactic Turtle is a one-of-a-kind maintenance shop and teaching facility in Portugal!
